The Medical Assistant is an integral member of the STL Fertility health care team, with
responsibilities in patient care and administrative areas.
Essential Job Functions include:
- Phlebotomy lab
• Perform venipuncture/phlebotomy and collect other specimens for testing,
using proper technique and Universal Precautions
• Order tests based on physician order and insurance requirements, and prepare
specimens for transport and testing
• Ensure that required consent forms for testing are completed - Participation in patient visits with the physician
• Review patient charts in preparation for their physician visits
• Take heights, weights, and vital signs and document results appropriately
• Take medical histories and review purpose of visit
• Review instructions and consent forms with patients, based on prescribed
treatment plan - Medications
• Give injections
• Review medication administration instructions with patients, including
injection teaches
• Place orders for prescribed medications

• Complete medication prior-authorizations and communicates with insurance
companies and pharmacies for timely delivery of medications
• Complete required insurance/financial procedures and documents
• Assist with coding for medical and lab procedures - Maintenance of clinical areas
• Keep exam rooms, phlebotomy lab, and other clinical areas clean and stocked
• Sterilize equipment
• Ensure that timely preventive maintenance and repairs are performed on
clinical equipment
• Ensure that biohazard materials are disposed of properly - Data Entry/Computers
• Utilize practice EMR to access necessary clinical information, process lab
orders, and to document patient care activities, outcomes, and test results
• Utilize practice EMR to access necessary demographic, insurance, scheduling,
and other information, and to schedule appointments
• Utilize online systems for ordering of tests as necessary - Surgery scheduling
• Coordinate all aspects of surgery scheduling with the physician(s) and surgical
facility
• Patient education and preparation for surgery, including ensuring the
completion of pre-op testing and receipt and review of results. - Assist physicians, nursing, and other office staff
• Perform duties appropriately delegated by the physician and/or nursing staff,
such as IUI’s, following up on test results, entering information into practice
EMR, and calling patients with instructions, answers to questions, or to obtain
outcome information

• Assist with training of new MA staff
Education and Experience:
• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Graduate of an accredited Medical Assisting program
• Experience in a medical office setting preferred
Competencies:
• Technical skills (i.e. venipuncture/phlebotomy, injections)
• Proficiency with computer systems including EMRs
• Knowledge of and compliance with insurance requirements (i.e. prior-authorizations)
• Ability to remain calm in stressful situations
• Ability to communicate accurately and concisely
• Adherence to all standards, policies and procedures associated with safety, sanitation,
confidentiality, and company operations
